Ephesians 4:11-12; And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers.
Example A: Bob, the grocery store supervisor, walked up to the two cashiers. He straightened his tie and name tag. They were having a conversation. Lolly-gagging on the job, again. “Ben, Kaitlin, get back to work! If I see this again you’re both fired!” Then went back to the bakery to visit with Molly, the cute girl he hired three days ago. Ben and Kaitlin figured out the receipt problem on their own went back to work biting their tongues because they need the jobs.
Bob is what kind of leader?
Functional or Positional?
Positional= This is someone who looks at positions as rungs of a ladder. They do not care for the person only the authority given by a title. They are not hard to spot because they love the spotlight. They brag about the title/position given them and then look for ways to be “above the law.” They act entitled by this and will use it to get what they want, or rub it in the nose of those under this title. They see it as a status symbol. If given the opportunity to advance, work harder, thes leaders take it without thought as to how they will get it all done. These leaders hate change because they may lose the security of the title.
Functional= This leader serves others. They don’t care about who gets the credit and works with a passion in whatever field or training they are in. They know there is dignity in hard work. They are willing to help and teach, and usually with a great attitude. Added responsibility is attracted to them, but they take it carefully because they know they cannot do everything in one day. They embrace change because it means more can be accomplished. They function as a leader even if no one gave them a shiny name tag.
What kind of leader was Bob? (above example)
What kind of leader was Jesus Christ?
John 13:5 After that he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe [them] with the towel wherewith he was girded.
What kind of leader are you?
Matthew 23:11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
If you want to be a leader in the Church of God, learn about him and make yourself available to HIM everyday. Don’t get caught up in the titles you see in the verse above. Just keep asking God, “What next?” Those functions will come to you, I promise. 🙂
Have a great day!
