Ephesians 5:7; Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
I had a wonderful woman ask me yesterday, “How can I be more connected with God?” It was a great question! My answer lies tucked in the above verse. The word “partakers” is translated from the Greek adjective “symmetochos” pronounced süm-me’-to-khos. An adjective that describes and modifies its nearest associated noun. In the case above it’s the pronoun, “them.”
It is only in the Bible one other time. In the other case below, it modifies, “Gentiles”.
Ephesians 3:6; That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel.
So what does “symmetochos” really mean?
1) partaking together with one, a joint partaker
a) of something
Partaker in the Webster’s Dictionary, “to eat or drink something esp. with others.” To join someone in their activity. You have to join in and get involved. You cannot be a partaker alone. And this word “symmetochos” is only used twice in the Bible. Interesting huh? This blew me away–in a good way! Freewill is the basis for all our decisions and this word partakers, cuts right to the core of that choice.
What is that Choice?
Lets examine the two verses with “symmetochos” in them, in context.
Ephesians 5:5-7; For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
Ephesians 3:3-7; How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel: Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God, given unto me by the effectual working of his power.
Wow. What are we talking about? Spirit. The children of disobedience have the spirits of the Devil, the promise of God is Holy Spirit and salvation and freedom from the slavery. That’s our choice. Natural man is born without spirit. He is born with this choice. It is the greatest, eternal, freewill choice of our lives! Once we’ve made that choice we join or partake in the cause, we get around God and his Word any way we can. We pray, we give, we fellowship with like-minded believers, we study the Word, we speak the Word. We grow in our new birth and become more and more blessed. We get connected. Go to God and ask how and where to do each of the above connecting activities, he knows and he will bless your diligence.
Okay, I don’t know about anyone else–but that was FUN! It was like find a nugget of gold in the Word from just one word!
