So much of God’s Word depends on order and timing. For example; God could not send the “Comforter,” the gift of holy spirit, to all those who believed if he had not raised Jesus from the dead yet. Or, He could not take Jesus Christ off the cross alive, Jesus had to die first in order to be a true sacrafice and redeem mankind. God has an order and placement for every event in the Word. He puts things where they are for a reason. Here in 1 Thess. 4:14; another ordered plan is laid out that we are going to break into two pieces.
Let’s, once again, break it down.
1 Thessalonians 4:14; For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again,
“For if we believe“…now there’s a loaded statement. How many people are believing believers? I’ve met a few unbelieving believers in my time, but how many of us really grab hold of the truth of the Word of God and let it power every cell in our body? There is a tantalizing difference between a believing believer and an unbelieving believer! That little word “if.” “If” suggests a condition. If, suggests an action requiring a decision. That decision makes all the difference! Folks, now is the time to grab hold of the truth of the Word and decide to believe it.
“For if we believe that Jesus…”
WHO? Jesus? You mean that doesn’t say Joseph, or Peter, or Mary, or Mohammed or Buddha? Do you see the condition there? Isn’t this beautiful?
Jesus died. Immortals cannot die. Spirits are immortal. God is immortal. If we believe what the Word says we must believe that Jesus Christ, the anointed Son of God, a man, died. To die is not to float on a cloud up in the sky somewhere! To die is to die. If Jesus did not die, the whole Word would crumble where it stands. If Jesus did not die, the Word of God is a lie and we shouldn’t believe it. But if he did in fact die, (which he did) then he was tempted in all things like unto us, and God raised him from the dead just like he plans to do for you and I! “But now is Christ risen from the dead, [and] become the firstfruits of them that slept.” (1 Corinthians 15:20) There, is the cornerstone of our hope! God did not leave His only begotten son to perish in the recesses of the earth but raised him incorruptible with a new spiritual body to live eternal life, just as He (God) plans to do for us.
We are not stuck here forever! Now that is comforting, isn’t it! I’d say a hearty “YES!” You and I are living the first day of the rest of eternity together with God. How soothing and wonderful!
What’s the rush? Why do we race around tiring ourselves out over trivial things? Live– in the great peace and comfort knowing that we belong to the family of God and he would not have us to be ignorant of our future and our hope.
Today is the day to celebrate this truth!
Tomorrow we will take the rest of this wonderful verse and look fully into the heart of each word.
God bless you today!
