Have we shoved God in a box? Are we using our five senses to determine where, when, and how God should perform a miracle on our behalf. Is that working? Is there a better way? I believe there is. But first we have to let God out of our little box of expectations.
I’d like you to go with me to Acts 8.
“As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed [them] to prison. Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.” Acts 8:4-5
Saul who would later be renamed Paul, had so much zeal for the Jewish law that he hunted Christians down and hauled Christian’s to prison. To him, they were terrorists, who deserved the highest punishment their laws could provided. Why? He was playing for the wrong team. But what did his particular zeal cause?
“And he (Jesus Christ) said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” Mark 16:15
I just want to point out that Jesus directed those disciples to go and preach to all the world. Were they going? Sometimes you need a little push out the door. Sometimes you need a little “inner” motivation. The best seasoning in any meal is hunger! Are you hungry for God? We look around ask, God why aren’t you supplying all my need? Where’s your mighty hand of blessing at today? But you haven’t gone to work in two weeks or picked up the phone to get new clients. Hey, it doesn’t work like that. God isn’t an ATM. We have to move. We are in charge of our life by our freewill.
All of God’s promises have two parts. Part (A) is the part you do. Part (B) is the part God does.
We read down chapter 8 and see Philip was running from all that haling, and scattering and God says, “Yo Philip, get on down to Gaza.” And there in his chariot, sat a Eunuch with great authority in Ethiopia. He’d come to Jerusalem to worship. Then, he was heading back to his Queen in another country. Now does God know everything? We get so excited when we get a new friend in social media so we can spread our influence, but look at the short cut God takes here. The rich queen of another country has social influence wouldn’t you agree? God is the first “social media” guru. So Philip “ran thither to him,” have you ever run on your thithers? My mom told me never to do that. (wah, wah)
“And Philip ran thither to [him], and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?” Acts 8:30
Can you imagine sitting in your car, with the windows down, and suddenly a man is running beside you asking, do you understand what you’re reading? Yikes! And this Eunuch probably had a motorcade. He was a version of an Ethiopian pop star in a stretched chariot back then. People all over were trying to get his attention, because he had the ear of the Queen. So maybe, that’s not such strange behavior after all. The Eunuch was reading about Jesus. Did God know, that at just the right moment he’d have a man on the scene who could help him understand? Yes, because of the running thither thing! Philip ran to do what he was told. He could’ve said, “God, really? That chariot? It’s going ten miles an hour! I’m gonna have to run with thithers!” (Wah, wah, wah)
Hey, my point is Philip was willing to do his part. Are you willing to do yours? What if the guidance doesn’t make sense? Then the Eunuch said an amazing thing.
“And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.” Acts 8:31
Wow, what a humble heart! Do you know everything about the Word, and life, and God? Are you taking that attitude to God when you pray for your need to be met? What if God says go to the Salvation Army and buy your clothes. Would that trip you out? How willing are you to do it God’s way? Philip was willing to do it God’s way and 4 verses later.
“…Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
God didn’t have control of Philip’s mouth or legs, Philip did.
And as they went on [their] way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, [here is] water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. (He got born again! Is that a miracle? DEFINETLY! Was it a need? Absolutely!)
Look what God does next!
“And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.” (vs. 39)
Wow! Amazing isn’t it? God transported Philip right out of the water! I bet He dried him off too. Did that bless the Eunuch, who was going back to the Queen of Ethiopia? You bet! Did that bless Philip? Yes, because his running thither day was over. God could’ve just asked Philip to run thither again, but He didn’t He just swept him away, and got him to his next destination.
God knows what you need, when you need it, and he is a big BIG God, but what about you? This is a partnership. Can we take God out of the box and let him direct our steps? We are workers together with God. When we do our part and let God do His, miracles happen in BIG ways.
God bless you today!
