Have you ever been around a braggart? Are you a braggart? How do you stop? A braggart is boastful, swaggering, bumptious, puffed up, full of oneself, cocky, conceited, arrogant, egotistical, swanky, big-headed, and a blowhard just to name a few. (From Oxford American Thesaurus.)
Characteristic number 4 is; vaunteth not itself. This is something the love of God does not do. Boasting is something God asks us not to do over and over. Here’s the literal translation; “Don’t be a braggart. Remember, God gave you what you have in Christ–give Him the glory.”
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:8-10
Why would it annoy God to fellowship with a condescending braggart? I can think of few reasons. It’s like a Model T bragging to Henry Ford that it can go really fast. Or a light bulb calling Thomas Edison dim. (Wah wah!) If anyone has the right to brag its God and He doesn’t ever do it. Wouldn’t that be annoying?
Bragging is an; “I did it my way, look at me, and everyone else can kiss my #%@” attitude. Humility is a; “Wow, look what God is bringing to pass in my life,” attitude. But I’m going to turn the tables on you for a minute. What is false humility? Have you been around someone who just won’t take a compliment or admit that they did a job well? There is a difference between arrogance, and confidence. If you have honed your craft, and slaved for years attaining a master status in something, you deserve a pat on the back. You deserve to celebrate a good work. Just remember who to give the glory to.
Have you ever been around a master craftsman of the Word? Their mind is always revolving around how it, the Word, fits into people’s live and can help them. You usually walk away far more blessed than when you showed up. And if you’re really hungry you walk away full. This is the opposite of bragging or vaunting oneself above God. It is the opposite of pride.
There are fifteen characteristics. 8 of them define what Love is. 7 Define what it is not. The what its nots are easy to spot! Wait till we get to thinketh no evil. That will surprise you! On the other hand if someone is walking in God’s love towards you, be thankful! How many do that? How many walk in God’s great love towards others? It is a rare thing indeed and something worth cherishing.
God bless you today!
