:012 The NOT That Impacts Everyone

There is one last “what love is not” on our list. Did you know it impacts everyone? From a church potluck to high-security prison this “not” ties them all together. Have you ever watched “Cars” the movie? Do you remember at the end when the green car, Chick Hicks pushed the old leader off the track into a bad wreck. He then passes Lightening McQueen, who is stopped at the finish line and begins a wild celebration all by himself. It’s the moment that Lightening McQueen realizes that life isn’t about cups, or winning, but about having integrity. Chick Hicks eventually has tomatoes thrown at him as he takes the stage to celebrate his own ridiculous victory. Yes, he won the cup, but he also lost all respect. His attitude is a bit over the top, or is it?

Rejoiceth Not in Iniquity

“To enjoy wickedness. To take delight in doing wrong. To be glad when an injustice occurs. Don’t do this.” 1 Corinthians 13:6

The pharisees acted this way when Judas betrayed Jesus Christ.

“Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.” Luke 22: 3-5

There are 7 what God’s Love is not. Rejoiceth not in iniquity is the last one in the list. It is also the one that ties all the other “nots” together. Look closely at what I mean. When someone does display all 7 of these characteristics, what do we have?

  1. Envy
  2. Bragging/Vaunting
  3. Egotistical/Puffed Up
  4. Behaving Disgracefully/Unseemingly
  5. Self-serving/Seeking Their Own
  6. Hot Tempered/ Easily Provoked
  7. Thinks/Reasons along Evil lines and Assumptions, and finally…
  8. Takes pleasure in seeing iniquity happen to others

WOW!

What would we say to the parent who is screaming at the coach of the other team, and storming around as the teams play together? That’s okay, they’re a fan, a fan is short for fanatic.

Okay, I won’t pick on sports because I’m sure there isn’t a parent of a player out there like this among my readers. Besides it’s just a game, right. That’s just the way sports are. We don’t see envy, bragging, towering egos, bad behavior, self-serving, hot-tempered, wrong assumptions or rejoicing when bad things happen to the other team…do we? So let’s move to a safer topic.

What about politics? If you are a member of one or the other party isn’t that party the only one right? What is a left winger or right-winger? Do they exhibit any of these characteristics? Alright, alright I’ll stop picking on politics because I know I’m not supposed to talk about that. Let’s talk about acting are the movies or their stars a safe place to look? Oops. I guess not. I’ve seen these same characteristics there as well. I better not mention religion, I could really get in hot water. Or chess, or mathletes, or forensic scientists, or aerospace, or aeronautics, or the military branches, or the quilting club, or the gardening clubs, because it seems there is always someone with a bad case of the “nots” and it ties them up in knots.

How can we untie all these when the devil hangs us in our own noose! How can we possibly wriggle out? We believe this promise;

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God [is] faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear [it].” 1 Corinthians 10:13

Keep in mind that the love of God is what God is. The list above is really the Devil’s characteristics and they all boil down to pride. Pride is when you place your opinion higher than God’s or anyone elses. Humility is when we surrender that opinion to God and allow Him to help us draw conclusions about people. This list of characteristics tells us what He is like, and how He behaves towards us. He is kind and patient, He never thinks evil, He is not easily provoked, He literally loves us into loving Him.

“Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?” Romans 2:4

I’m excited to get into the rest of the fifteen characteristics because I can’t wait to see the amazing truths of His love in my life.

God Bless You!
