When does believing God become fact? One of my favorite subjects in school was biology. Biology comes from the Greek word bios, which means “life,” + ology, which is the “study of.” Today, we are “bio-belief-ologists.”
There is a leading article done by scientist, and atheist, Sam Harris that says “beliefs” are dealt with, in our brains, as facts. Such as; a person believes in the second coming of Christ, as easily as they believe that the sky is blue. We conclude that a thing is true by simply deciding that it is. He says that after many tests of atheists and Christians alike, that there is no distinction in the brain between how an unbeliever or a believer of God decide a belief. “Belief is belief is belief,” as Sam Harris puts it.
The poor guy thought he had to prove that a Christian’s decision making aparatus, our brains, are wired the exact same way as any other human brains athiest or otherwise. Did he prove it? Yes. But what did he prove? The Word of God is accurate true for any man, woman, or child. He proved that God is no respecter of persons. We all come from the factory with the same abilities to believe or not believe just like everyone else.
So what is the difference between believers and athiests?
First, we need to understand there are two types of belief.
(Side Note: Scientists usually study things based on the five senses because that’s what we can measure. We can see, prod, poke and test an ounce of isopropyl alcohol. Can we measure a test tube full of hope, or love, or faith? Those things never get studied. So why can’t we measure the results of someone who understands the Art of Believing God. God is a Spirit and all spirit is invisible. We can’t feel Him in the five-senses realm. We can, however, study the results of believing God. Mark 16 says, …”these signs shall follow them that believe.” Shall, means absolutely. Doesn’t that become something measurable?)
The Word of God documents two distinct types of believing. There is the human belief; finite in nature and susceptible to doubt, worry and fear, and the believing or faith of God; infinite in nature and operates power beyond human frailties and limited understanding. When someone who is not born-again of God’s Spirit sees this next verse, which type of “belief,” human or the faith of God, do you suppose he needs?
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Romans 10:9
Who believes? The person, the human involved believes, by way of and in the depths of, their own heart. They decide the verse is true. (Side Note: This act of human belief takes less than seven seconds and only needs to be done once to obtain the simple promise of salvation. Wow! Did God make that simple or what?)
Now, the very next verse explains the design of the human heart. Every human heart works this way, athiest, sinner, believer and Christian alike.
“For with the heart man (non-gender specific for Human believing) believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:10
For with the heart we believe. Our heart steers our believing. What do we believe? We believe lots of things with our heart. We believe that the sun will come up tomorrow. That a certain fitted jeans will make us look more attractive. We believe that our spouse loves us. We believe that there is good in the world, or bad in the world. How did we come to these conclusions? How did we arrive at all these decisions? How did we become such “believers?” We poked, tested and measured the results.
So what is the other kind of believing and why is it so different?
When you are saved (Grk. sozo=made whole) as Rom. 10:9 says you are made whole. We are body, soul and then God pours in the gift of Holy Spirit at the time of our “believing” or decision and makes us three parts again. Well, all spirit is invisible. So how can we know that we are saved? We need a physical manifestation of the gift of Holy Spirit inside us. One of those is the manifestation of faith. Wow. This is the biggie. This is the “faith of God.”
What is the faith of God? The believing of God is the same powerful believing that moves mountains to the sea, it created the heavens and earth and raised Jesus Christ from the dead. This is the power of God Himself in manifestation in our lives. God moves to do the impossible for us. God could have named it anything, like the power rod or the power key, yet He nicknamed it the “Comforter.” Human faith is as tiny as a mustard seed in comparison!
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.” John 16:7
So how do we get the power rod in our lives?
“And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God (the faith of God). For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive [them], and ye shall have [them].”Mark 11:22-24
God holds the purse strings on that power, for good reason too. Remember, Simon?
“And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,” Acts 8:18
Simon needed salvation, but he wanted to buy and use the power for his own exploits. Does it work that way? Nope. What did Peter say, by revelation, to him?
“But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.” Acts 8:20-21
What is all of this telling us? The human heart or belief must be tracking and believing in the faith of God. How do we do that? There is a process involving 3 building blocks.
