Has Discouragement Shattered Your Dreams?

A seed planted by the One True God lies within you. Does it lie dormant? Do you yearn for more in your walk with God? Do you wish you could see your dreams coming true and your prayers being answered consistently? I know what it’s like to have circumstances swallow my vision of the future. Maybe you have already given up on this “so-called” seed.

You may feel like the Jews in Nehemiah’s day and time felt. They were under captivity. The kings had recently realized that if they let the Jews build their temple they would also have the favor of their God. So they let them rebuild it but they hadn’t allowed them to rebuild their wall. The wall symbolized their independence and would protect them from any who would continue to rule them. Imagine, as a Jew, looking at your wall. It was crumbled and breaking in many places. The gates were burned and anyone could come and go as they pleased. The destroyed wall was a slap in the face. It told them they were slaves and that they were not free. Ezra, the prophet had worked hard to restore the traditions and laws of God back to the people in the city, but without the wall’s protection, some of the rules were inadvertently broken. People who worshipped idols/devil spirits could waltz in and start doing business or live among them. They were forced to associate with rank unbelievers and couldn’t “clean” up their town. How would you feel? It’s like the devil could come in and spiritually and/or physically rip off God’s people when ever he wanted. Imagine living in the worst place on earth, and then taking all the doors and windows off your home. Looters, beggars, thieves, rapists, you name it, they are all free to do what ever harm they intend on you and your family. For the Jews, and maybe for some of you, it was the worst situation to raise your children in.

Then Nehemiah shows up with a letter from the king and wood for their gates. Imagine how the Jews felt when he said these words.

“Then I (Nehemiah) told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me. And they (the Jews) said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for [this] good [work].” Nehemiah 2:18

Imagine their triumph and relief! It was a revolutionary surge of power towards their own freedom. Are you ready for your freedom? Do you long to overcome fear, depression, or anxiety? Is the devil having his way with your family or your life? Maybe you’ve tried to stand a little, then do the scorners laugh or  throw doubts in your way?

“But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard [it], they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What [is] this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?”

Do you dare to rebel against the devil? Do you dare take back your home from the invasions of video games, television, or porn? You dare to believe God to supply your needs?

“Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we, his servants, will arise and build: but you have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.” (You have no right in my home or life!)

Do these words stir within you? Right now I’m ready to pick up a musket and fight the British or join our military or –begin to speak in tongues! Folks, we are not fighting over a physical plot of land today. We fight for our spiritual and mental fortresses. We fight to rebuild the walls of protection from spiritual invasion.

Here is your personal letter from the King of Kings!

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Ephesians 6:10-11

Here is your lumber for your gates!

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places]. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore...” vs. 12-14a

How did Nehemiah build this huge wall and all these gates in just 52 days?

“So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.” Nehemiah 4:6

Each person built the wall in front of their own houses. Each family took ownership of their section of wall even the women and children! As they built, the enemies attacked.

“For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and [so] builded…” vs. 18a

When the enemies tried to take Nehemiah away from his work and have “special” meetings to talk about the matter, do you know what he said?

“And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I [am] doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?” Nehemiah 6:3

What is trying to pull you away from restoring faith in your family? Are there distractions? Of course! This is not a new trick of the adversary’s. Discouragement is just another trick.

Nehemiah knew he was doing a great work, do you? Here is your life, your fifty or seventy years here on earth what is the work of your hands? Facebook? Twitter? Bowling?

Folks, we are called to a higher calling in Christ Jesus. We are here to do a great work. Be bold!

“…Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, [which is] great and terrible, and fights for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses” Nehemiah 4:14b

Now is your time. Build your wall. Make each family member responsible for their part. If there is a breach, go to God and reclaim what is yours through the power of that seed of Christ within you.

“So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth [day] of [the month] Elul, in fifty and two days.” Nehemiah 6:15

Nehemiah did what looked impossible in less time against worse odds than we’ll ever have to face. But it all comes down to one thing.

“And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month.

3. And he read therein before the street that [was] before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people [were attentive] unto the book of the law.

5.  Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:

9. And Nehemiah, which [is] the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day [is] holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.

10. Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for [this] day [is] holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” Nehemiah 8: 2-3,5,9-10

The Word of God is our source for understanding. The understanding is the joy of the Lord which is our strength. The God of Nehemiah is the same God who has adopted you into His eternal family today. If you need to build a wall in 52 days, you have God. If you just need to pay rent, you have the Same God!

God bless you today, all day!
