Who Gets the Glory?

Our verse today again explores motives and I’d like to demonstrate how incredibly fine the line is between God receiving the glory and us receiving the glory.

“Whose end is destruction, whose God [god] is their belly (self or ego), and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.” Philippians 3:19

(I’d like to point out an error in the KJV. They capitalize God here. God capitalized would be the God and Father of Jesus Christ. This verse would be hugely mistaken. So take that out.)

This is on the heels of yesterday’s amazing verse about the enemies of the cross. Paul says he tells us this weeping. Wow. How did he make this point? Well, we must go back in context. I hope you have your Bible open.

Here’s a re-cap of chapter 3. Paul starts out saying, “Finally brethren rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you to me indeed is not grievous (irksome), but for you it (reinforces you) is safe.” He  warns us about people who cause you to separate from your protective herd and family. Then he goes on by saying he has no faith in the flesh, as these people do. And everything in his earthly acclaim is nothing when it comes to what he now has in Christ.  Then he adds that he has not attained perfection of the new resurrected body yet but that is what he follows after. And the one thing he does is put the past behind him and press towards the mark for the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. And to mark those who walk the same way as good examples. Follow those who are examples of demonstrating God’s love and power because the opposite kind of examples are out there. And they are enemies of the everything we have and everything God has done. They demonstrate fear and defeat.

What is the theme of the whole chapter?

The renewed mind. The renewed mind is the key to our power as believers. Why? Because, as he spoke of twice in this chapter, the lack of renewed mind causes destruction. The opposite of the glory of God is to glory in one’s self. Let’s look at it more simply.

Self/Devil/Pride Vs. Selflessness/God/Humility
Faith in the flesh NO Faith in the flesh
Covet Earthly accomplishments/acclaim Things that were gain to me, I counted as a loss for Christ.
The self-made man. That I might win Christ.
Back biting, evil works, self mutilation No confidence in the flesh, worship God in spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus.
Mind earthly things Press toward the mark of the high calling in God
Whose god is themselves (worship themselves, idolatry) Worship God in spirit (speak in tongues)
Reliving those things which are behind, (good or bad)  Forgetting those things, which are behind.
Their end is destruction, eternal death. Press toward the mark for the prize…eternal life in a new spiritual body.

The next two verses really seal up the chapter well.

“For our conversation (Politeuma in Greek meaning; the commonwealth of the citizensis in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.” Philippians 3:20-21

Wow, and there is The Hope again. What a finale for this chapter!! I catch my breath in amazement at God’s seamless precision. We can no longer afford to doubt the accuracy and integrity of God’s rightly divided Word. Do you see how this fits together with a scientific exactness? WOW! What is OUR end? God, life, eternal blessing and a glorious new body. Then Jesus will subdue all things. This word subdue is the Greek word hypotassō this is the word for submission, which is loving obedience, by proper arrangement and deliberate decision. Jesus Christ will subdue, put everything back in the proper order, again. The devil has things out-of-order and has everyone worshipping the wrong things. Jesus will re arrange that. Isn’t that exciting. How? You ask. The devil and all his cohorts will be thrown into the lake of fire and never again be allowed to wreak havoc in this world again. The devil will no longer be the god of this world, he will be displaced forever. OH YEAH BABY!

That is their end, telos, which is the Greek for; the very last moment of the last part of the end. Who decides when everything ends? God and God alone. Why is He waiting so long for the end? Why doesn’t God just decide and let us have our peace?

Like no other time in any other age in history, God has given us, in this age of Grace, the opportunity to become HIS kids. We are adopted, finalized, sealed and forever part of His spiritual DNA. Is that a big deal? When God sends Jesus Christ back that’s the end of this amazing age. Does He want as many kids as possible? YES!

“So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written,

Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where [is] thy sting? O grave, where [is] thy victory?

The sting of death [is] sin; and the strength of sin [is] the law,

But thanks [be] to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:55-57

So who gets the glory? God! Who gets the victory? We do because we didn’t submit ourselves to the lure of self, and the lure of pride. Wow! We win! We did it! We get to raise our arms high to God.

God bless you today!
