Wednesdays Were Made For Overcomers

Do you have the Hump Day blues? Here’s a story about four rebels that’s sure to strengthen your inner overcomer.

wednesday overcomer-001

I’m paraphrasing.

It’s 495 B.C. well after King David had built Jerusalem and had left it to the care of Jewish descendants which had then lost it to Babylon ruled by King Nebuchadnezzar. Old King Neb was a man who kept his magicians, astrologers and counselors close at hand. These men toyed with him because they were possessed by devil spirits who wanted power, subservience and total domination. But King Neb wasn’t a total sell out to these men. He knew that he had to watch them and be careful of them. He had a soft spot in his heart for what he found as wise and understanding children of God. There were none in his kingdom like Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. But Daniel and the three others continually had to prove their God to King Nebuchadnezzer.

For instance; the servants of the king became exasperated with the four. They just wouldn’t do what they were told. They were told to eat meat from the king’s table, but no they said God wanted them to eat vegetables and water only. When their faces and skin improved to the quality of baby’s skin, they proved their God. The King had a dream that he couldn’t remember, he threatened to kill all the magicians and counselors including the children of God. He said someone better tell him the dream and it’s interpretation or they’re all dying. How was anyone supposed to know what happened in the Kings’ own mind, if he didn’t? Well, Daniel prayed and sure enough God proved Himself again by providing the answers to Daniel. This went on and on. Until the King realized the Daniel was special and maybe his God was special too. But that didn’t stop him from being swayed by devil spirits. He decided one day to build a great golden image and force all of his subjects to bow to it. Again, our rebels were caught not doing what they were told. Old Neb was so mad that they would bow to his idol that his visage changed. (His appearance changed. In other words, the devil spirit manipulating him energized this change.)

“Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego: therefore he spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace one seven times more than it was wont to be heated.” Daniel 3:19

Boy oh boy was Old King Neb hot. He hated being defied! Just like the devil does. Back then the devil could just kill anyone who didn’t agree with them, now they have to discredit, erode the reputation, and steal the joy of any who might defy them. Of course, Neb tried to kill them. But what happened?

These children of God again proved that He was real, and stood in the midst of the heat without being singed. They had company in that furnace. An angel of God stood watch. Talk about some serious spiritual warfare. They walked out without so much as the smell of smoke on their beards. Wow! What overcomers!

When you think about your day today, Hump Day, think about the way these men stood for God. It might have even been on a Wednesday. Today in 2013, we have paychecks, businesses, the internet, cable television and cars. We have two hundred times the technology, but do we stand with the same heart for God as these men did? Would it be so hard? All they did was put Him first. The same God that lived in 495 B.C. lives and wants to prove Himself to us today. He wants to walk and talk with us. Ask Him what you could do to bless someone on this mid-week day. Trust me your whole week will change.

God bless you today!
