What is the Sign of Our Salvation?

I promised in yesterday’s post I’d talk about how we can know with physical proof of the invisible reality of God’s Spirit residing in us. I promise to tell you what it is, but first let’s talk about painting.

IMG_6084Here is a picture of Isaac and I finger painting at least a year before I discovered my passion for it. At this point, I was having fun, but way more worried about the mess he was making. Notice his art bib, his containment unit called a high chair and my lack of “messy” painted fingers compared to his. We were having fun, but I clearly remember thinking, “My goodness what a mess!” Isaac loved it! But I still had some hurdles to overcome before I dove in and really explored what painting meant for me. And look at me now? I’m so glad I didn’t refuse to allow him to paint again, because in my story as a professional artist, he and this mess played a big role in getting me started.

There is so much more to the salvation “bundle” than we ever realize when we are first learning about it too. We think we know everything about the mess God saved us out of. We think everyone around us knows too and has taught us everything they know. But where does the all-knowing, all-powerful and all-loving God fit into it? Maybe God has a specific lesson and curriculum planned for your journey. But if you block Him out because of the “mess”, how will He ever show you more? He is the creator of the Heavens and Earth. There has to be more to this salvation package than we think we know.

“Now concerning spiritual gifts (matters) brethren, I would not have you ignorant.” 1 Corinthians 12:1

Wow, God comes right out and says, He does not want us ignorant about spiritual matters. What’s the opposite of ignorant? Educated! How do we become educated when all we here is churched up messages that urge us to “have faith” but never tell us HOW? We learn from the people getting results. Just like artists want to learn from those who are better than they are, God puts people and opportunities in your life to lead you forward. Ha! Maybe that opportunity is right here, and right now for you.

God is a big guy. He longs to talk to you, so He saved you. But that’s not all He did! He also protects and blesses you. But He never overrides your freewill. You must want Him too. Do you? Do you want to get closer to Him than ever before? God is Spirit. God is Holy. So what did He give us? The gift of holy spirit. This gift has nine functions, or manifestations. Just nine. No more no less. Do you know what they can do? It’s like a great painter giving a student nine tools to paint with. Would you want all nine? Or would you say, no thanks De Vinci, I’m good with just a pallet and canvas, I don’t need any brushes. Who would look ignorant in that scenario? You or De Vinci? Okay, so what are the nine manifestations? Let’s prove it with the Word of God.

(Note: Most biblical scholars agree that this translation from the King James Version is sketchy at best. The KJV however, got the translation the closest of any version so that’s what I’ll use. But I’m going to add notes in bolded parenthesis to clear up confusion and help you gain clarity.) Let’s go to 1 Corinthians 12

“Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.” (there are different uses for the same spiritual gift which is the gift of holy spirit.)

“And there are diversities of operations (manifestations), but it is the same God which worketh all in all.”

“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man (Grk: hekastos; male or female) to profit withall.” (for profit or benefit)

“For to one (for one profit…) is given by the Spirit, the word of wisdom; to another (for another profit or benefit to every man and woman) the word of knowledge by the same spirit; To another (for another profit) faith (or the manifestation of believing) by the same Spirit; to another (for another) the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; to another (for another) the working of miracles; to another (for another) prophecy; to another (for another) discerning of spirits; to another (for another) divers kinds of tongues; (speaking in tongues) to another  (for another) the interpretation of tongues But all these worketh that one and the self same (gift of Holy) Spirit, dividing (distributing by the will of the man using the gift) to every (each man or woman) man severally (Grk: idios; one’s own) as he will.(chooses)” 1 Corinthians 12:4-11

Here is the section as the interpretation again with my marks and translations that I’ve learned from biblical scholars rightly dividing the Word of God. Here again is verse 3-11

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man, male or female, for profit. For one profit, and benefit for mankind, is given by the gift of Holy Spirit, the word of wisdom; for another profit the word of knowledge by the same gift of holy spirit; For another profit the manifestation of believing by the same Spirit; for another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; for another the working of miracles; for another prophecy; for another discerning of spirits; for another  speaking in tongues; for another the interpretation of tongues But all these worketh that one and the self same gift of Holy Spirit, distributing by the will of the man using the gift, to each man or woman in his own will as he chooses. 1 Corinthians 12:4-11

In the first translation, God favors a few people or select people with these special skills. Someone may have one manifestation and that’s it. But why would God do that? Wouldn’t that cause envy, strife and confusion in the body of Christ? Was I not given a whole physical body when I was born? Why would God say to my sister, you can have two arms, but Terri can only have one? That would be favoritism on God’s part.

“Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:” Acts 10:34

God is no respecter of persons, so He must have given every manifestation to every person who believed Romans 10:9-10 and was born again of God’s spirit.

So tell me Terri, why doesn’t the whole body of Christ do all these things? I think there are two reasons.

  1. They’ve never been taught that they can and should do all nine manifestations.
  2. They never rise to the believing in their own walk to operate their own gift of Holy Spirit in its fullest capacity.

It’s just like being in shape physically. Some of us go guns blazing towards the healthiest lifestyle physically possible. And others…not so much. So what’s the difference? Each person has freewill.

Let me tie all this together. Here are nine ways for us to know that we are born again of God’s Spirit. There is only one of the nine that cannot be faked by the adversary, which is speaking in tongues. The Bible warns us about lying signs and wonders, but never about a fake speaking in tongues. So learn how to speak in tongues and do it as often as possible. The devil can’t fake it and you cannot do it with out gift of holy spirit. You can’t lose it is a sure sign of your salvation!

I understand it takes time to learn any new skill and like painting I first thought it was a messy business. But if you try, and ask God to show you more, you will learn. I have put a comprehensive guide teaching a person HOW to speak in tongues in my eBook called, “5 Basics for Growth” The High-Octane Christian Series.
