Relationships; For Leaders

Why are relationships so tricky? And…

How can a leader protect and encourage strong relationships with those they lead? Today I found some amazing advice right out of God’s Word on this subject and thought I’d share what I found.

First, relationships don’t have to be tricky as long as you keep this one thing in mind.

Leaders have the opportunity to earn a Crown of Glory. {1 Peter 5:4}

Yep, doing things right in leadership right has its rewards. I don’t know everything about the Crown of Glory, but we can be assured of two things.

  1. First, if the Creator of the Universe, the God of ALL Flesh is handing you a reward for your service, it’s a freeeeeking BIG deal.
  2. Second, if you are receiving a reward for your service to God, then, BY GOD YOU EARNED IT. God is just, loving and righteous. He never gives out rewards to those who didn’t earn them. Unlike men who error in their judgement due to the five senses and miscommunications. God is never off in His judgement calls.

So what do we have to do we qualify for a Crown of Glory? Let’s look at the context of 1 Peter and find out. (My comments are all caps and in parenthesis)

“The elders (LEADERS) which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight [thereof], not by constraint, (BY FORCE) but willingly; not for filthy lucre,(EAGERNESS FOR BASE GAIN) but of a ready mind (GRK: PROTHYMUS READY AND WILLING WITH A PASSION); Neither as being lords over [God’s] heritage, but being ensamples (EXAMPLES) to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. Likewise, ye younger, submit (Greek: hypotassō, which means; loving obedience by proper arrangement and deliberate decision) yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all [of you] be subject (HYPOTASSO; loving obedience by proper arrangement and deliberate decision.) one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, (MATURE) stablish, (ESTABLISH) strengthen, settle [you]. To him [be] glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. – 1Pe 5:1-11 KJV

Does that look like a tall order? It might seem like it, but really it’s not. We submit ourselves to God’s direction with eager readiness and willingness then do as He asks. God is perfect. No man, accept Jesus Christ, is perfect. God just asks us to humble ourselves to the truth. THAT truth is God has all the answers and He loves us. By doing what He asks, when He asks, we step out of pride and into a proper, loving and obedient arrangement with Him. Leadership is just more obedience and humility. Relationships are an area where God should be a solace and a source of profound comfort. He knows how to handle them. Trust that and you  will earn the trust of others. Then you will be well on your way to a Crown of Glory.

God bless you today!
