This is a very special blog post today. In the fall of 2012 I had decided to take every one of the 15 Characteristic of the Love of God. In the series, I wrote 18 total posts. Below is the first post of that series, and below that is a list of all the posts in the series. I challenge you to read every one of them and leave your comments too.
:001 Look with me closely.
Can we only give what we have?
Can we only produce from what is already there? If so…what are we with God?
“And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, [and] the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed [is] in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.” Gen. 1:11
A cat species can only mate with a cat, a whale with a whale, human with human, etc. If a horse mates with a donkey, their offspring is sterile and called a mule. God designed it this way for a reason. Everything “after its kind.” In Genesis, He also says that He created man in His image. What is God? God is Holy and God is Spirit.
First, He formed this body of the dust, then He breathed life-giving breath into Adam’s lungs and he breathed in, just as every child takes its first breath. Then He did something spectacular. He gave us Holy Spirit. He wired us for it from the beginning.
He was like the contractor who puts the wiring in for a security system into the house he’s building. That contractor knows one day there has to be service to those wires. Only when that house is connected to the main hub of service, will they be linked with the security. What happens if no one connects the service to the hard wires set in place? Does the house cease to exist? The same is in you and I. There is a part of us waiting to be accessed, turned on, and activated.
This means that God created us “God” hungry.
We want to know what is it like to know God? All species have characteristics that define them. Human’s have them, animals have them, plants and insects have them and they are all different. What are God’s? We know from the Word that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. God is invisible, God is Spirit, God is Holy, God is good always. And just as with humans there are levels of understanding inside each characteristic. What about God’s Love? In the Greek, charity or love is many translated from “agape” or “agapao”. This word is God’s Love, as in the spiritual love, called agape.
If we are made in His image, then the characteristics that define His love, should define our walk as well.
He put Love in us, now what is it? How do we know if we have it right? Let’s see what God thinks.
“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity (agape=love), I am become [as] sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have [the gift of] prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed [the poor], and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.” 1 Cor. 13:1-3
This verse tells me I could be doing all the “right things” and still get it wrong, even to the point of sacrificing my body to the cause! Whoa!
Doesn’t the devil trick us up with this all the time? He gets us focused on all the processes and systems of doing a thing, to the point of forgetting why we’re doing the thing. He gets us distracted away from the heart of the matter. He focuses our attention on our clothing, hair, the things we can manipulate and control through our five senses. People can live their whole lives trying to make the world/people/religions/or job happy, yet remain a hollow shell without “Love”. God knew this. He knew the special ingredient.
As we go through this series on Agape/Love you will begin to see first;
- why it’s easy to do, and second;
- why a ministry/person/life could never go wrong by making it the focus.
If you’ve followed this blog for sometime you’ll see that I have tips, tricks, advice and plenty of it, but it always comes back to;
…what is the profit, what is the love?
God loves us. We didn’t deserve it but boy are we thankful for it. Then He shows us how to love like He loves. This is the first post of our next series of posts, about God’s Love. We’ll examine this subject like a treasure trove, and find out what God really expects us to do.
“And now abideth faith, hope, charity (agape=love), these three; but the greatest of these [is] charity (love).” 1 Corinthians 13:13
Our Father put Himself in us, in the form of the gift of holy spirit. We can only give what we have. What does that mean about His Love? Check back tomorrow as we find out together.
God Bless You Today!
