The ground groaned and rumbled. The air-cooled, birds quieted and I heard the ripping of the earth below my feet. It was like no other sound or feeling I’ve ever had. My stomach hitched and my heart raced, did I know what this was? It must be an earthquake! Run! Hide! Find safety! That was all I could think.
When was the last time you felt like that? Sometimes emotional shocks can feel like that, but imagine this moment.
“Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;…Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.” Matthew 27:50-51,54
Jesus Christ’s death was significant. It proved the devil in all his cruelty had killed the Son of God. He was a man who never denied God, or his birthright. He stayed true to the truth of who he was and what he was, a son of man and the Son of God. But this was not the spiritual shock of the ages. The devil had reigned here on earth and planned to continue reigning. He killed Jesus Christ to prove that he could. But this isn’t where God won and the devil lost. Jesus Christ’s death had been prophesied about since Adam and Eve. That was no great thing. Men die. It was no great victory or shock. Men are still dying for causes today. Well then, was this next event the spiritual shock?
“In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.” Matthew 28:1-6
Can you imagine seeing this? Wow! the earth shaking, the angel. WOWZAH! What an event! What a shock…no. It couldn’t have been a shock because the guards were put there because the pharisees expected him to rise again. Look at this verse.
“Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.” Matthew 27:62-63
So what was the surprise? What was such a shock to the spiritual ages?
“And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marveled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?”Acts 2:2-8
This had never happened before, but yet again, this was not a shock. Isaiah, the prophet said that with stammering lips and another tongues shall I pour out my spirit upon my people. SO what was it?
Here, it is. The shock of all shocks. The event that turned the tide forever. Before this God’s people were Israelite. That privilege was special and unique. They were the chosen. No other nation was included in that…until now.
“While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts 10:44-45
By way of an act of creation, each Gentile in that room received what we receive the first time we believe Romans 10:9-10. The Gift of Holy Spirit. WOW! Now that was a shock. The devil had lost, not just the Jews but the Gentiles who believe as well. It was poured out on all mankind. The devil lost his authority and control! He no longer dictates what happens in our life. We have received great power and access, but how little do we know about it? Now is the time to learn about this wonderful gift and believe to use it in our lives.
God bless you today!
