Do you ever feel buried in pressures that aren’t coming from you? Debt? Unresolved issues? Communication problems?
In the midst of all that, how do we get a new lease on life?
May 24th is the day of Pentecost this year. It is quickly approaching, and I have written a post almost everyday since Easter about God and His Word. This has been a fifty day challenge that I feel good about. There have been days I’ve forgotten to blog. There have been days when I woke up late and didn’t have time to do it. There have also been days when I didn’t feel like blogging. April 7th, I blogged the first time about this series. We are over half way to Pentecost. I am so excited, aren’t you!?
Imagine for a moment,
You are one of Jesus Christ’s disciples during this time. Jesus Christ passed away thirty-one days ago, he has already been seen by many of your friends and maybe even you. He told you to wait in Jerusalem for the “Comforter” to come and the pressure is rising around you. Jews are actively seeking to kill or imprison the rest of Jesus “Christ-ians”. Your name is on their list. They have hits out and maybe a few bounties too. Most of the day you spend in hiding, in an upper room. Whenever you go out, people ask you about the Messiah, and Jesus, and the ministry. You can’t go anywhere in the city without being recognized as his follower. Just imagine the terror. Your leader, teacher, and friend is gone. His grave is empty. What’s going to happen? You and the others are trying to have faith, you’re trying to believe, but things look really bad.
Then something like this happens.
“Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.” John 20:19
There he is standing in your midst! He just appeared suddenly. Nobody knocked, nobody opened the door. He was just standing there in all his resurrected glory! Stunned silence hits you. It’s really him!
“And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.” vs. 20
“Glad” is the Greek word chairō. It literally means leaping with joy, rejoicing, exceeding triumphant burst of salutations! They flipped out!! The upper room erupted!
How would you feel?
I noticed the other day when I was driving that this fifty-day period is actually a long time. A lot can happen in fifty days. And I man a lot! That’s like a third trimester and birth of a child, a move, a closing on a house, a change of scene/job, and or relationship. There are so many things that can happen in that fifty days! Discouragement would’ve set in for the disciples, frustration, contempt for putting them in danger. All kinds of doubts, but then, you see, Jesus didn’t just leave them hanging. He came and visited with them. He showed them over and over that he had risen.
Look at how Paul summed up Jesus’s re-appearances.
“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: 6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. 7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. 8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.” 1 Corinthians 5:3-8
Jesus stayed connected to his followers. He also helped them have hope, that everything they went through and were going to go through, was worth it.
We have that same opportunity. We also are waiting for the time when Jesus will finally reappear again. With all those witnesses to his first appearances, how could we doubt he will come back again? In the mean time, we have this spectacular connection with God through His gift of Holy Spirit. The Comforter did come in Jesus Christ’s place. It’s our job to use, operate and depend on it.
After the disciples saw Jesus appear before him in that room, do you think they had any more doubts? NO Way! They had a new lease on life because He gave them hope. Every time you speak in tongues you can have that same proof and hope that He is coming back a second time. And no matter what pressures you’re feeling it won’t change that you are a child of God and no amount of crap will change that. Jesus is coming’ back for you and the devil can’t stop him. In fact, the devil will bow to him.
“Beloved, now are we the sons (children) of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is” 1 John 3:2
God bless you today!
